PRISM-E a Cave

Drones, IoT sensors, satellite data, and artificial intelligence to monitor the territory and support the prevention of fires, landslides, and flooding. In Cave, the PRISM-E pilot project—a research and development initiative led by TopNetwork—is now in full swing.

The PRISM-E pilot project is coming to Cave, in the province of Rome, where the project will be tested in a real-world environment with the goal of developing an advanced system for land monitoring and environmental risk prevention.

The project, co-funded by the Lazio Region as part of the 2021–2027 Lazio ERDF Regional Program, is led by TopNetwork as the lead partner and involves ACGroup, CNR-IIA, Guglielmo Marconi University, and the City of Cave—the project’s end-user and the site for the final certification in an operational environment at TRL 7.

A digital ecosystem for identifying and anticipating risks

PRISM-E integrates satellite data, drones, IoT devices, advanced sensors, and artificial intelligence algorithms into a single platform.

AI processes data from various sources to identify anomalies and potential risk situations. When a critical area is identified, the system can trigger more detailed surveys using drones, creating an up-to-date digital representation of the territory and providing useful information to support timely analysis and decision-making.

Areas of application include the prevention of landslides, fires, and flooding through the monitoring of slopes, vegetation, potential fuel, and changes in land use. The project also calls for the use of SAR technology to monitor floods, even under conditions of poor visibility.

Quarries as Experimental Environments

Areas in the Cave region will be designated for satellite monitoring and drone flight tests. These activities will enable field testing of connectivity, autonomous and cooperative navigation, data synchronization, and the operation of chemical-environmental and IoT sensors.

The pilot program therefore represents a crucial step in PRISM-E’s journey toward final certification, which is scheduled for March 2028.

To mark the launch of activities in the area, Italpress produced a video news report dedicated to the project, featuring testimonials from TopNetwork and the Municipality of Cave and providing a close-up look at the technologies involved in the pilot program.
