LIVING IOT

LIVING IOT is a research project aimed at creating an advanced IoT system, able to provide innovative services in the Smart Building and Smart Agriculture fields, by exploiting the Cloud and Fog Computing architectural models.

In the context of Smart Building, the system will offer home control and home protection services (e.g. against thefts, fire, flooding), support for the elderly and non-self-sufficient people (e.g. people with disability) and home health care (e.g. chronically ill people).

In the Smart Agriculture sector, Living IoT will provide advanced crop monitoring and management services, planning of activities in agriculture, intelligent irrigation, management of the distribution processes for agricultural products, traceability of products in the supply chain, management of safety in the transport of goods.

The project, launched in March 2019, has received a positive evaluation from the Ministry of Economic Development Ministry (in accordance with the “Accordi per l’Innovazione” action, issued by the Ministry for innovative research projects), and will obtain a financing contribution granted by the above action.

The Living IoT platform consists of a technological framework for the management of tools, functionality, user interconnection, services and devices located in the buildings and agricultural fields. The main features of the framework are interoperability between different devices / services, use of advanced semantic reasoning components, methodologies and techniques for the definition of ontological models, user profiling, agronomic knowledge base, solutions for the automatic creation of digital twin of intelligent objects, cognitive models for the management and automatic configuration of smart environments.

Regarding the Smart Building environments, the goal is to create a building like an ecosystem, which regulates itself to ensure a safe and comfortable habitat for its inhabitants; for example, through:

  • user and behavior recognition (eg biometrics, RFID)
  • recognition of personalized situations and threats (authorizations, security levels, time slots)
  • environmental sensors (smoke detectors, air quality, humidity)
  • home actuators for:

    alarm activation

    roller (shutters, doors, etc.)

  • monitoring of sick people
  • adaptation of the environment to the patient’s health condition
  • alert to caregivers in case of abnormal conditions so as to allow timely intervention
  • notifications to the patient on the medicines to be taken
  • room adaptation based on the user profile (brightness of the rooms, indoor / outdoor temperature, etc.)
  • control and reduction of consumption, interacting with the home’s IoT devices

The Living IoT Smart Agricolture system, exploiting the: agronomic “knowledge base” (eg the composition and behavior of soils, the types of crops with their phenological phases, the methods and techniques of irrigation); data from the field sensors (temperature, atmospheric and soil humidity, wind, etc.); localized weather forecasts is able to automatically define the optimal irrigation plan, modifying it every time conditions change, both in terms of data collected on the ground that of changes in forecasts. Crop management and activity planning in agriculture is developed through:

  • agronomic rules for the management of irrigation and crops
  • geolocation systems for land
  • weather forecast
  • Decision Support System for predictive strategies
  • data collection technologies on / from the field and implementation of decisions

The monitoring the supply chain, supply management, security management, traceability and identification of the strategies to be adopted, ensure that overall processes can fully meet the growing expectations of consumers, and technologies applied to the supply chain will make farms more agile towards a constantly evolving market.
